Adams, Dickerson Lead Millsaps to Weekend Split
Bowie posts career-high six blocks in 16-point win over Dallas

December 2, 2007

JACKSON Junior college transfer Tiffany Whitmore notched a career-high 21 points in a conference-opening loss at Hendrix, 88-79, on Saturday before Millsaps bounced back with a convincing 57-41 win over the University of Dallas on Sunday thanks in large part to a career-high six blocks from junior Jessica Bowie.

Millsaps (2-3, 0-1 SCAC) shot a season-high 43 percent – 54 percent in the second half – and scored a season-high 79 points against the Lady Warriors in the conference-opener for both teams, but Hendrix (4-1, 1-0 SCAC) came out victorious in the end after holding onto an eight-point halftime lead and surrendering the lead just once in the opening minutes.

Christina Byler scored a game and team-high 28 points on 7-of-14 shooting to lead three Hendrix scorers in double figures, followed by Wyvonne Hawkins with 22 and Amanda Morris with 20. Samantha Clark grabbed a game-high 12 boards.

The Majors had four scorers in double figures, led by Whitmore's 21 and junior LaReina Adams' 17 points and 10 rebounds – her first double-double of the year. Dickerson added 16 points followed by freshman Ronda Webb with 13 points and a team-high four assists.

Back in the Hangar Dome on Sunday afternoon, Millsaps won the turnover battle and held the University of Dallas to a season-low 41 points and 30 percent shooting, turning a nine-point halftime lead into the Majors' largest margin of victory in 27 games at 57-41.

Millsaps opened the game on a 6-0 run, capped off by a jumper from freshman Krista Clark, and pushed its lead out to 19-6 over the first 13:35 of the half.

Dallas (4-2) committed 20 turnovers in the first half alone, including eight in the first six minutes, that allowed the Majors to score 14 points and take a 24-15 lead into intermission.

Out of the break, Millsaps scored the first nine points to take its largest lead of the game at 33-15 before the Lady Crusaders rallied for a 13-2 run after a 30-second timeout from first year head coach Jennifer Fleming.

That's as close as the University of Dallas would get, however, as Bowie picked up four of her career-high six blocks in the second and the Majors made good on 15-of 17 shots from the charity stripe to hold off any kind of a late run.

Webb added a career-high 10 boards for Millsaps to go along with six points and three steals, while senior Shanie Cardinal scored a team-high 10 for Dallas and freshman Meagan Johnson added six points and six rebounds off the bench.

The Majors will put their 2-0 home record on the line this weekend, playing host to Piedmont on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. tip with Louisiana College on Saturday. Millsaps lost a close battle with the Lady 'Cats in Pineville back on Nov. 24, battling back from a 22-point halftime deficit in a 58-54 loss.
