JACKSON – Nikki
Sosebee notched a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards
to lead three Piedmont scorers in double figures and the
Lady Lions pulled away from a close game late by knocking
down
10 of their final 11 free throws in a 62-54 win on Friday night.
Junior Tiffany Whitmore pumped in her
first career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 11
rebounds to lead Millsaps, while fellow juniors
LaReina Adams and Crystal Dickerson added 12 and 11 points. Dickerson
also picked up seven boards and a game-high five steals to give
the Majors a season-high 15.
An NCAA Tournament participant from a year ago, Piedmont (8-2)
knocked down a pair of 3-pointers on its first two field goal
attempts to open the game on a 12-2 run, capped off by a layup
from Sheena Trimiar at the 14:48 mark in the period.
Millsaps (2-4) battled back from a 10-point deficit
the remainder of the half on a pair of buckets from Dickerson,
Adams and Whitmore, using two free throws from Adams with 1:02
left in the half to give the Majors their only lead of the period
at 26-25.
The Lady Lions closed the half with a layup from Sosebee to hold
a 27-26 edge and opened the second half hitting 5-of-6 shots
en route to a 40-26 advantage. Lisa Jennings hit a pair of
3s to start the 15-0 run over 5:35, as Piedmont was a dismal
3-of-15 in the second period.
From there, Millsaps put together a furious run of its own over
the next 10 minutes, outscoring Piedmont 20-5 and taking a 1-point
lead, 46-45, on Adams' free throw. The Lions hit just 1-of-15
shots over the Majors' run, while the home team connected on
8-of-15.
Sarah Lane's 3-point bucket countered the free throw and gave
Piedmont a 48-46 edge at the 4:59 mark, a lead they would not
surrender the rest of the way. The Lions connected on eight of
their final nine free throws, including 4-of-4 from Sosebee over
the final 20 seconds.
Millsaps will try and get back in the win column tomorrow evening,
playing host to Louisiana College (4-2) out of the American Southwest
Conference at 5 p.m. The Majors rallied from a 22-point halftime
deficit in
the
last
meeting
in a 58-54
loss in Pineville.
