JACKSON – Millsaps
built its lead out to as many as 17 in the first half to take
a nine-point lead into intermission before the visiting
Louisiana College Wildcats outscored the Majors 32-19 in the
second half for a 55-51 come-from-behind win in the Hangar Dome
Saturday.
LC (5-2) shot just 30 percent for the game but forced 23 turnovers
and held Millsaps (2-5) to a season-low 28 percent shooting,
including 24 percent
in the second. The Lady 'Cats held a 24-9 edge in points off
turnovers, picking up 17 of those points in the deciding second.
Millsaps also hit just 1-of-13 shots from beyond the arc, matching
a season-low 1-of-13 effort the first time these two teams met
in Pineville, a 58-54 Wildcat win.
The Majors opened the game on a 10-2 run as LC missed nine of
its first 10 shots. The lead quickly grew to 29-12 over the next
12 minutes, as junior Crystal Dickerson netted all 14 of her
points in the first half on 6-of-10 (1-of-1 from 3-point land)
shooting from the floor.
Millsaps held LC to a season-low 22 percent shooting (8-of-36)
in the first half while hitting 32 percent of its shots, nevertheless
the Lady 'Cats closed the half on a 11-3 run to shift the momentum
heading into intermission down just 32-23.
Out of the break, LC continued its hot-shooting by hitting five
of their first 10 shots to open the period to take a 35-32 lead,
capping off a 23-3 run over the previous 7:40. Tillisha Givens
scored four of her 10 second half points during
the Wildcat run, helping the visitors to their first lead since
the 17:11 mark in the opening period.
Junior Tiffany Whitmore scored nine of her team and game-high
15 in the second half alone, converting a 3-point play to put
the Majors back on top at 37-35 at the 14:57 mark and again at
39-37. It would be Millsaps' final lead of the contest.
LC put together a 16-3 run over the next 8:29 to push its lead
out to 53-42 on a Krystle Hunter layup and survived a 9-2 desperation
run by Millsaps over the final 3:33 to hold on for the 55-51
win, their second four-point victory over the Majors in as many
tries.
Whitmore led all scorers with 15 points and dished out a game-high
five dimes, while Dickerson added her second double-double of
the year with 14 points and 10 boards. Juniors LaReina
Adams and Jessica
Bowie also added 12 and 10 rebounds and freshman
Ronda Webb had seven as Millsaps grabbed a season-high 60 (23
offensive).
Ashley Peairs had a team-high 14 points to lead the Lady Wildcats,
while Taylor Henderson added a double-double with 10 points and
12 rebounds and Givens added 10 points.
Millsaps will take a three-week break before its next competition,
facing off with cross-street rival Belhaven
College at 1:30 p.m.
on Saturday, Dec. 29, at Heidelberg Gymnasium.
