CLINTON -- Senior
forward Lacey Kennedy scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed
13 rebounds and Yalanda Grady and Emily Younger both had their
best performances of the season as the Mississippi College Lady
Choctaws downed the visiting Millsaps Majors 77-54 at A.E. Wood
Coliseum on Saturday.
Mississippi College (5-3, 1-3 American Southwest) started off on
an 8-0 run and built its lead to as many as 19 points as they cruised
to a 34-23 halftime lead.
The Lady Choctaws shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the stripe and a
combined 42 percent from the floor in the first half alone, while
Millsaps was led by senior Deborah Sturgis with 10 points on 5-of-9
shooting.
Millsaps (1-6, 0-2 SCAC) tried to make a game of it and trailed
only 38-28 minutes into the second half, but a 22-12 Lady Choctaw
run over the next eight minutes ended any hopes of a Major comeback.
Freshman Marianne Smith scored in double figures for the fourth
time in seven games, leading the Majors with 14 points on 4-of-8
shooting from the floor and 4-of-4 from beyond the stripe. For
the season Smith is third on the team and leads all freshmen with
7.9 points-per-game.
Sturgis and Crystal Dickerson chipped in 11 points apiece and sophomore
LaReina Adams pulled down a team-high six rebounds in the loss.
Millsaps will have three weeks off before its next road game and
will continue non-conference play, traveling to South Padre, Texas,
Dec. 28-31 to compete in the South Padre Island Shootout.
The Majors face off with No. 12 Howard Payne at 7 p.m. on Friday,
Dec. 29 and will then play the winner/loser of Simmons/Ramapo at
either 3 or 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Other participants in the tournament include Denison, Amherst,
Allegheny, Maryville, Messiah, Pitt-Bradford, MIT and LeTourneau
University.
