(Ashley Wilbourn)
The Millsaps College Lady Majors traveled to Southwestern University
on Fri., Jan. 13. The team faced off against their conference foe
in an intense match-up which Millsaps eventually lost by a two-point
margin.
In the first half of the contest, Southwestern was able to maintain
a lead over the young Millsaps ball club for the majority of the
period. Although their lead was initially small, the Texas based
school eventually boosted their lead to eight points with about
six minutes left to play in the half.
As time continued to elapse, however, the Lady Majors fought back.
Shooting close to 60 percent in the period, the Lady Majors were
able to close the lead Southwestern held to two points, 32-30.
As the second half began, Southwestern once again made an effort
to boost their lead over Millsaps. Shooting at a high percentage
in the opening minutes of the half, Southwestern brought their
lead to an 11 point advantage by the 14:14 mark. Just as they had
in the first though, the Lady Majors began to slowly cut down the
Southwestern lead.
With 1:50 left to play, Southwestern led the game by only one
point. After a Millsaps timeout and a Southwestern turnover, Crystal
Dickerson went in for the Lady Majors, scoring a lay-up and giving
Millsaps a 55-54 lead. The lead held until with nine seconds left
Southwestern scored off of a Kristen Johnson three-point shot,
winning the game 57-55.
The Lady Majors shot 47.1 percent for the game with Dickerson
leading the way for the team, scoring 19 points and grabbing nine
rebounds. Millsaps will next focus its attention on Trinity. The
Lady Majors will travel to San Antonio on Jan. 15 for the match-up.
