Wide Receivers Coach David Johnson
WHAT HE FELT THE BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS WERE SO FAR…
“I think the guys are really working hard so far. I am also impressed
with our freshman class- they are doing a great job adjusting
to college football. Another thing I am impressed with is our
offensive line they are really coming. Athletes like Andres Wallace,
Adam Williams and John Shivers are doing a great job being a leader on the team
this year. We also have a local athlete from
Jackson named Oliver Galicki, who is really doing a great job,
and I am very proud of him. We are going to keep fighting, and
we are going to keep quarterback Juan Joseph healthy so that
we'll be successful."
WHO OF THE GROUP OF FRESHMAN PLAYERS HAS IMPRESSED YOU SO FAR…
“Martin Haaga a receiver from Tennessee is a really good receiver
he can see it (the ball) for a young man coming straight out
of high school. I am also impressed with his goals after college,
which is to become a nurse. He is really focused on what he wants
to do after football, and that is great. He is one young man
who has really stood out so far along with Kenny Reeves from
St. Paul’s HS on defense. Kenny is doing a real good job
for us as well. So far these young men have really stood out
for us in terms of play another outstanding athlete for us has
been Shane Bowser who is a running back.”
WHO HE FEELS
WILL LEAD THE WIDE RECEIVERS CORE...
“Eric McCarty is one of the top guys to lead the group along
with Raymece Savage, Donnie Epps and Burt Pereira. They have
all been great leaders and are doing a great job for the team. One
of the biggest surprises and improvements has been from a young
man that was a freshman last season Michael Galatas. Mike
has
been doing a great job at the extra receiver spot and he is going
to really help us out this year stretching the field. We can
now throw for longer yardage thanks to his hard work."
WILL THE
TEAM BE ABLE TO SPREAD THE BALL OUT AS THEY DID LAST SEASON…
“That is a must I tell the guys that all the time and that is
one of the biggest reasons for our success at the receiver spot.
These young men are so unselfish that they are willing to block
for each other and get themselves open down field. And in order
for us to be successful we have to continue to be unselfish.
That is the mark of a good receiving core.”
WHAT HIS MAIN FOCUS IS BEFORE THE START OF THE SEASON…
“It’s like I tell my receivers all the time... it is all about
alignment, assignment and effort. As long as we continue to
do those things the wins and losses will take care of themselves.”
Offensive Coordinator John David Caffey
WHAT HE HAS SEEN IN PRACTICE AND WHAT HAS SURPRISED HIM…
“We are going to keep a lot of the system from the past two years,
but we are going to build upon it and make it more successful.
We are going to be more balanced with our attack, and we are
going to run the ball more. The most pleasant surprise has been
Juan Joseph and his understanding of the system and his ability
to see the entire field. Our biggest concern is getting enough
balls to our talented receivers.”
ON THIS
BEING HIS FIRST JOB AT A DIVISION III PROGRAM…
“I played Division III football, but this is my first year at
a coaching position at this level. Coming from Division I, this
is an enjoyable environment to be able to work with these type
of athletes. They are truly pure student-athletes we are dealing
with here.”
HOW HE FEELS THE TEAM MATCHES UP AGAINST MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE…
“Our big concern for us is that they have nine defensive starters
returning that are very talented. We feel like we match
up with them offensively as well as feeling that we are as good as anybody. The
only team that can stop us
is us. Adam Shaffer is a good quarterback for Mississippi College,
but he will be going up against a good defense as well. It is
going to be a fun and entertaining game that is for sure.”
