STERLING, Va. -- For
the seventh time this season and the third time in as many
weeks, a Millsaps student-athlete has been named to the d3football.com
National
Team of the Week. Junior linebacker Ronnie Wheat earns this
week's honor, his first weekly accolade of the season and first ever
national award.
"I'm proud in a way," Wheat said. "But we still have to go out
this week and get better against Trinity."
Wheat recorded
five tackles, two pass breakups and two interceptions, including
a 19-yard
return
for
a
touchdown late in the fourth quarter that sealed the 14-6 victory
over Rhodes. Wheat also picked up the game-saving tackle at the
Millsaps 3-yardline on the final play from scrimmage. The
interception return marked
the 14th interception
on the season for
Millsaps and the fourth time this season a defender has taken the
ball to the house for a score.
Defense wins championships and it was present at Fargason Field on
Saturday afternoon in Memphis, Tenn., as the Majors won a dogfight
in the Lynx backyard.
"Defensively we're a lot more cohesive," Wheat said. "We're fitting together
as
a
unit
and
everyone's
making plays when they get the chance."
The Majors will close out the regular season against No. 19 Trinity
University this weekend at Harper Davis Field. Millsaps was already
assured a shot at the conference championship, but Saturday's
win makes the Nov. 11 Homecoming matchup that much sweeter, as the
Majors and the Tigers are both 5-0 in the SCAC.
When asked about this weekend's matchup, Wheat replied with a grin
"we'll take care of it."
The Majors are looking for their first conference championship since
the 1996 season and its first playoff appearance since 1975.
Game time is slated for a 2 p.m. start with Homecoming festivities
scheduled before kickoff and during halftime.
