The weatherman
called for heavy rain and sloppy coinditions to play a football game,
but by the time Hurricane Ivan had become a thunderstorm just south of
Emory, Virginia the Majors (1-1, 0-0 SCAC) were set to kickoff against
the Emory and Henry Wasps.
The Majors
would lead the Wasps for 3 1/2 quarters before allowing a touchdown pass
with 3 minutes left to give the Wasps a 24-20 advantage. With under one
minute remaining the Majors had the chance to get out of Emory with a
win, but two dropped balls in the endzone sealed the Majors fate.
Running backs
Eryc Lorino and Tyson Roy again led the charge for the Majors offense.
Lorino finished with 112 yards rushing including a 78 yard touchdown run,
Roy collected 95 yards and a touchdown and fullback Neil Woodall had 29
yards rushing and one touchdown.
The defense
had trouble containing the Wasps passing attack surrendering 253 yards
in the air compared to 60 on the ground. This will be the main topic of
conversation before next week's "Riverside Rumble" with Belhaven
College among the Majors coaching staff.
The Blazers
quarterback, Brian Zbydniewski, won the Mid-South Conference's Offensive
Player of the Year award last season based on his impressive passing stats
in 2003. The Z-man returns for his senior season in 2004.
The Majors
defense led again by Marshall Brown intercepted twice and sacked hiim
three times while controlling the line of scrimmage throughout the contest.
The Wasps air attack posed a problem for a young defensive backfield.
Woods finished 21-35 for 253 yards and three touchdowns on the day.
Junior free safety
Joey Doxey had six tackles including one for loss and picked up his first
career interception and sophomore corner Kirk Jackson picked up his first
interception of the season. Cornerback Ray Kline had six tackles and safety
Ross Rutledge had six tackles and one pass defended.

five tackles including two for a loss of seven yards and Stephen Parr,
