Jack Wright has been
named to the Millsaps Majors football coaching staff and will take
over immediately after fulfilling his duties to Meridian High School
(MHS) in Meridian. Wright will coach the offensive line for the
Majors in 2005.
Wright has accepted
his first collegiate coaching job after handling the offensive line,
tight ends, and deep snappers for MHS from 2002-04. Wright also
taught personal finance and information processing at MHS.
As a high school
player Wright won a state championship in 1993, as a sophomore,
at South Panola High School in Batesville. The team, coached by
his father Willis Wright, has been called one of the best Mississippi
high school football teams ever after compiling a 15-0 record and
sending several players on to college and pro football careers.
After graduating
from South Panola, Wright attended Arkansas State University in
Jonesboro where he was a three-year starter at center and deep snapper.
Wright spent five seasons with ASU from 1996-2000. A scout team
member for one season, Wright became a three-year starter for the
Indians at center and deep snapper.
Millsaps College
Head Football Coach David Saunders guided the defensive secondary
at ASU from 1996-97 where he first met Wright.
Wright now has
the chance to coach a Majors offensive line that features First
Team All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference center Conell Phillips
(6-1 282) and Second Team All-SCAC tackle Jay Buck (6-5 315). Majors
guard Charles Gordon (6-1 295) received Honorable Mention All-SCAC
honors for his play in 2004.
