Roy back on track and freshman QB sees first action in win

Millsaps running back Tyson Roy rushed for 132 yards and scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner with under six minutes remaining, in the Majors 21-17 conference road win Saturday against Sewanee (2-7, 1-4) at McGee Field.

The Majors (3-4, 2-2) put the offense in the hands of freshman QB Mike Dean and he did not disappoint going 8-14 through the air for 125 yards and one touchdown. Starters Brandon Morris and Raymece Savage were both on the sideline with injuries.

Dean connected with freshman wideout Louis Conley on a 27-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter for the first touchdown pass of his career, but his longest pass of the day was to Christian Johnson for 30 yards.

The Majors defense, led by Stephen Parr with eight tackles, was unable to contain the Sewanee scoring machine, Wes Satterfield. Satterfield was responsible for all 17 of the Tigers points in the contest with two touchdown runs and a 23-yard field goal. He also kicked the points after touchdown.

Ross Rutledge had six tackles from his strong safety position and freshman Canaan Ferris had a season best five tackles at linebacker. Free safety Joey Doxey had five tackles including one for loss and JJ Gilmore, recovered from injury and seeing his first action of the season, collected four tackles including one for loss.

Marshall Brown and EJ Johnson had four tackles apiece and Ronnie Wheat had three tackles including one for loss for 16 yards and a pass break up. Ishmael Lockhart and Josh Ladner had three tackles each and both made a stop behind the line of scrimmage. End David Cutter had the lone sack of Satterfield for seven yards. Matt Kirkpatrick had two tackles and a pass break up.

The Majors came from behind twice in the second half and three times overall in the win. The conference road win was the Majors first since a 58-16 win against Rose-Hulman in 2000.
