The Millsaps Majors (1-3, 0-1) dropped their first conference game
of the season Saturday in Danville, KY to the Centre Colonels (5-1,
2-1) 38-10. The Colonels jumped out to a 31-3 lead at halftime.
The Colonels scored on their second play from scrimmage, a 66-yard
pass from Kevin Phelps to Adam Clark to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Colonels ended their next possession, a eight play, 70-yard
drive with another touchdown by Phelps, this one on the ground before
the Majors put points on the board.
Phelps had a career day coming off an injury that caused him to
miss the previous week. Phelps finished the game 16-25 with 235
yards and three touchdowns, one on the ground.
The Majors took the ball on their next drive and marched 34 yards
in eight plays. DJ Mello capped the drive with a 37-yard field goal
with 1:40 remaining in the first quarter.
A Colonel touchdown run and Phelps' second touchdown pass of the
half increased the lead to 28-3 and Colonel kicker Ryan Gardner
drilled a 23-yard field goal with 37 seconds left before the halftime
break to increase the lead to 31-3. The Majors had just 51 yards
on offense at halftime.
Billy Bob Orsagh scored the lone Millsaps touchdown when he capped
an 11 play, 50-yard drive with a three-yard TD run closing the gap
to 31-10. The drive was started when Ross Rutledge recovered a Colonel
fumble at the 50-yard line.
Tyson Roy, the 2004 SCAC rushing touchdown leader, returned to
action for the Majors after missing two games running for 115 yards.
Injured in the first half of the Majors first game, Roy picked up
where he left off. The sophomore also added 68 yards on three kickoff
returns. Roy also led the SCAC in kick return average last season.
Millsaps began the second half with a 16 play, 66-yard drive but
failed to score from the Colonels ten-yard line.
The Majors had a respectable 166 yards rushing against the Colonels,
but the passing game never got off the ground totaling 52 yards.
The Colonels totaled 447 yards of offense on the Majors injury depleted
defense.
Leading tackler Ronnie Wheat had five tackles and a pass break
up in the loss. Canaan Farris led the Majors with ten stops followed
by Ray Kline with eight. Rutledge had seven tackles, two for loss,
a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
The Majors also could not capitalize on Colonel mistakes. Three
fumbles were recovered by the Majors. Uncharacteristically, the
Majors had ten penalties. The SCAC's leading punter, Todd Rhoden
was also out for the game, so receiver Matt Foisy filled in. Foisy
filed an impressive 38.5 yard average with a long of 60 yards.
The Majors welcome Rose-Hulman next weekend for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff
on Harper Davis Field. RHIT won last season's contest 14-7 in Terre
Haute, IN.
