Millsaps
loses to Trinity, ends season 2-7
The Millsaps
Majors traveled to San Antonio, Texas this weekend to face the
#6 Trinity
University Tigers. The Majors took a 2-6
record into the game and the momentum from last weekend’s
Homecoming win over Rhodes College. The Tigers brought a perfect
8-0 record into the battle along with a first place ranking in
the SCAC.
In the first quarter,
Millsaps was the only team to move the ball effectively. In their
second possession of the game, following
a Trinity punt, the Majors held on to the ball for 14 plays, moving
75 yards down the field. Eventually, however, the Majors turned
the ball over on downs, giving Trinity the opportunity to take
over. Trinity failed to take advantage of Millsaps’ inability
to score. The first quarter ended with a score of 0-0.
The second quarter saw a much stronger offense from the Trinity
Tigers. With 11:51 left in the half, Tiger quarterback Jacob Cannon
completed a 51-yard pass to Matthew Weldon for the first score
of the ballgame, giving Trinity the 7-0 advantage. After the kickoff,
Millsaps was once again able to drive the ball against the Trinity
defense, taking the ball from the Millsaps 27-yard line to the
Trinity 29. The Majors were unable to convert the drive into a
score, though, turning the ball over on downs for the second time
in the contest.
Trinity’s offense
continued to produce points, scoring on their next two drives.
The Tigers first scored on a 1-yard Jacob
Cannon quarterback sneak. On their next drive, Trinity scored on
an 8-yard touchdown pass from Cannon to Ray Valencia. The Majors
continued to struggle offensively, fumbling on their last possession
of the half, leaving the score at halftime at 21-0.
In the second half, Trinity punted once, scoring on every other
drive. On their first two possessions of the half, the Tigers kicked
field goals. On the two ensuing possessions they scored touchdowns,
bringing the score to 41-0. The Majors did not help their own cause
in the half, fumbling the ball three times and throwing two interceptions.
The score from the game
is not indicative of the level of competition within the contest.
The Majors had 13 first downs in the contest,
compared to the Tiger’s 17. Millsaps also gained 146 net
rushing yards compared to Trinity’s 177. Millsaps also ran
a total of 69 offensive plays compared to Trinity’s 65. Time
of possession in the game also split evenly with Millsaps holding
onto the ball for 29:50 while Trinity had the ball for 30:10.
