Fourth quarter struggles plague the Majors

The Millsaps Majors took the field on Sat., Oct. 29, looking to pick up their first conference victory and their second win of the season. Facing the 3-4 Sewanee Tigers, the Majors hoped to use their home field advantage, more experienced freshman quarterback and now healthy running game to garner a morale raising triumph.

Sewanee, however, had other plans. On their opening possession, the Tigers, starting at their own 13-yard line drove the ball down the field to the Millsaps 16-yard line where, on the leg of kicker Andrew Gould, the Tigers took their first lead of the game, 3-0.
Unable to continue their offensive attack, the Tigers rescinded to participating in a defensive struggle throughout the remainder of the first half. Finishing the first quarter with the score of 3-0, Millsaps opened the second quarter with an interception by freshman defensive back Marcus Harris. Harris intercepted the Wes Satterfield pass on the Millsaps 3-yard line, preventing the Sewanee score.

Millsaps was unable to take advantage of the turnover, but after a change of possession, the Majors once again forced a Tiger mistake with Satterfield fumbling the ball on the Sewanee 43-yard line. After moving the ball into the red zone, junior running back Tyson Roy took the ball into the end zone for the Majors, rushing from four yards out, making the score 6-3, Millsaps. The point after attempt failed.

After the Millsaps score, Sewanee drove the field again on the Majors, making it to the Millsaps 2-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. The Majors took over in their own end zone and were forced into a safety, making the score 6-5 Majors going into the half.

Millsaps opened the second half as Sewanee opened the first. After driving the length of the field, the Majors scored off of a DJ Mello field goal from 20 yards out, making the score 9-5, Millsaps. On Sewanee’s ensuing possession, the Millsaps defense once again forced a Tiger turnover, as Harris recovered the Jake Roberts fumble and took the ball in for a touchdown, bringing the score to 16-5 at the end of the third quarter.

Millsaps’ fourth quarter struggles began to plague the Majors immediately upon beginning the last period of regulation. Sewanee had the initial possession of the quarter and scored on a 22-yard pass from quarterback Blake Mears to Jason Loudon to draw the Tigers closer at 16-11. The two point conversion attempt failed.
Sewanee scored again on their next possession when Satterfield took the ball into the end zone from three yards out. The two point conversion attempt worked this time, and Sewanee took the lead of 19-16 with 2:13 to go in the game. The Majors were unable to produce any offense and were forced to face another loss, bringing the team’s record to 1-6, 0-4 in the SCAC.

In the game, Majors quarterback Billy Bob Orsagh went 6 of 14 with no interceptions and a total of 76 yards. Tyson Roy and Eryc Lorino led the rushing attack for Millsaps. Roy gained 53 net yards on 20 carries, while Lorino gained 13 net yards on six carries. Ross Rutledge led the Majors in tackles with a total of 16 for the day.

Millsaps will play at home for the last time this season on Nov. 5 for Homecoming as the Majors take on the Lynx of Rhodes College. The game will begin at 2 p.m. on Harper Davis Field.
