TUNICA – In
a strong field that included seven out of the Top 20 teams in
the latest Golf World Preseason NCAA Division III poll, Millsaps
placed 20th with a combined score of 660 for the two-day
tournament at Tunica National Golf Resort.
Twenty-one
teams competed on Sunday and Monday in the annual event, with
4th-ranked Oglethorpe, 5th-ranked Huntingdon, 11th-ranked
Emory, 13th-ranked UT-Tyler, 15th-ranked Rhodes, 19th-ranked
Transylvania and 20th-ranked Texas Lutheran all in the field.
Oglethorpe,
who finished third in last year's event, took first place with
a combined score of 579 to edge out second place Huntingdon
by three strokes. Olafur Loftsson dropped a 69 on the scorecard
on Monday to finish the weekend 2-under par to lead the Stormy
Petrels.
Texas Lutheran
(588), Oglethorpe-Team B (590) and UT-Tyler (592) rounded out
the Top 5 teams, while Millsaps stumbled to a 20th place finish
after carding a 660.
Sophomore Adam
Haywood led the Majors with a two-day score of 163 to finish
t-82nd overall, whereas Jerry Johnston (165), Madison Field (165)
and Jack Rader (167) rounded out the top scores for Millsaps.
Millsaps will
take two weeks off before its next competition, Oct. 13-14, at
the North Alabama Golf Classic in Florence, Ala. The team will
tee it up at Blackberry Trail GC.
