JACKSON – Millsaps College athletic director
Tim Wise and associate athletic director Jim Page announced
today that the Majors would team up with ATW Sportscast to
stream live video for various sports during the 2008-09 athletic
seasons, beginning on Friday night with the men's soccer
game against Louisiana
College.
"The great thing about this is that you can do
webcast for any sport that you have on campus," Page said. "It's
a great opportunity for us to expose our sports more for our community.
It will bring
us as a department so much more exposure, and allow for many people
to connect with us on a completely different level that we could
not have provided previously."
Millsaps is just one of six member schools in
the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference that offer live streaming
video
in addition to Trinity University, Southwestern University, Centre,
Rhodes and Sewanee and will have a professional face behind the
scenes in
ESPN Radio's Derrel Palmer.
"Derrel is extremely
knowledgeable in all things Millsaps and will make our webcast
only enhance the viewing experience for our community," Wise said.
"It will be a great opportunity for everyone involved and I can't
wait
to see the live webcast."
The live
webcast will serve several functions for the department, including
being used as a recruiting tool for potential student-athletes,
viewing for parents, fans and staff who may not be able to make
it out to a game, and can help reconnect with the many
alumni
that have come through Millsaps.
"As with all new things, there might be a few mistakes,"
sports information director Kevin Maloney said. "Friday night's
soccer match will be our first run with ATW
Sportscast
and
we may have
a
few glitches on the web, but we are confident this is the best
thing going in athletics right now and we want to get it right."
Viewing for the live streaming webcast will have
audio for football, baseball and basketball to begin with, while
other sports like soccer and possibly volleyball will be strictly
video with live game whistles and sounds feeding from the field
or court. Football will also have an FM frequency available to
listen to in the stadium and will be announced before each game.
