MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Junior
Brandon Mong's goal in the 55th minute sparked a span of four unanswered
goals for Millsaps in 15:07 as the Majors
rallied to knock off Fontbonne University (Mo.) on Saturday
afternoon in the Rhodes College Classic in Memphis 4-1.
The win for
Millsaps (1-0) was its first season-opening win since 2004 – also
at the Rhodes Classic – with
Mong, Drew Dews, Aaron Hyatt and Andres Colocho each finding
the back of the net and senior goalkeeper Domenick DiPaolo earning
his first win between the posts. Jess Jobe had three saves in
a losing effort for FU.
DiPaolo, making
his first start for Millsaps since 2006 after serving 10 months
in Iraq, allowed just one goal in the opening 8:39 from
Fontbonne's Kevin Vonarx before settling in and picking up a
pair of saves.
Sixth-year
head coach Lee Johnson made some solid second half adjustments
for the Majors as they enjoyed a 10-2 shot advantage in
the second period that proved to be the difference.
Millsaps will
conclude the Rhodes Classic with a Sunday matinee, facing Augustana
College out of Illinois at 2 p.m. The home-opener is slated for
Friday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. against Louisiana College. |
