Millsaps Drops a Pair in Memphis to Open Season
Majors fall to Principia (Ill.) 3-1, Washington University (Mo.) 3-0

September 3, 2007

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --
After entering the season winning four of their last six matches at the Rhodes College Classic in Memphis, Millsaps dropped a pair this weekend to the visitors from Principia (Ill.) and Washington University (Mo.), falling by scores of 3-1 and 3-0.

Ricky Seaman put Principia up 1-0 just 8:51 into the opener, beating Majors goalkeeper Jake Milner on an unassisted goal -- his first of two on the afternoon.

Millsaps responded minutes later as Andres Colocho carried a ball to the end line and slid a nice pass across the face of the goal to sophomore Aaron Hyatt who beat goalkeeper Dana Byquist on a one-timer at the 12:27 mark to knot the game at 1-1.

The Panthers would add a pair of unassisted goals by Spencer Brown midway through the first half and Seaman with 15 minutes to play in the game to make the final margin 3-1.

Both teams showed physical play throughout the second half, as the teams combined for 17 fouls (PC 12, MC 5), three yellow cards and one ejection by Principia with four minutes left in regulation.

In the weekend closer, the Majors battled Wash U to a scoreless bout in the first half before the Bears rallied for three early second half goals in a 3-0 win.

"Wash U is a very skillful and direct team with a lot of speed," head coach Lee Johnson said. "I thought our guys handled it the best they could without having a day off in between the two games, as the Bears had Saturday off."

Milner picked up a season-high nine saves in the loss as the Majors were outshot 30-3 for the game. Bears goalkeeper John Smelcer improved to 2-0 on the year after the shutout.

Millsaps will wrap up a three-game road stretch on Friday, traveling to Pineville, La., to face off with Louisiana College in a 7 p.m. match. The Majors will return home the following day for their home-opener against in-region opponent Rust College.
