Wildcat Men Edge Majors in Overtime, 1-0
Men fall in home-opener on a penalty kick in the 96th minute

September 11, 2006

JACKSON - In a statistically dominated home-opener by the Millsaps men’s soccer team at Harper Davis Field on Saturday night, Louisiana College pulled out a 1-0 overtime win thanks in part to a questionable foul call in overtime that led to a Wildcat goal.

Millsaps (0-4) who lost its third one goal game in four tries, outplayed, out hustled and out shot Louisiana College 20-10, but just couldn’t find the back of the net to get the win.

The Majors completely dominated the first half of play, holding the Wildcats (2-2) to only one shot on goal.

Heath Smith looked to have the Majors first goal of the season, but a last second attempt by Wildcat keeper Chris Lemoine denied Smith’s rifle shot from 30-yards out.

The second half saw continued Millsaps dominance, as they took 11 shots to the Wildcats four.  The Majors also earned six corner kicks to the ‘Cats one.

Two of the Majors six shots-on-goal came in the second, including Lance Allen’s near miss from 30-yards out and Brandon Long’s shot that sailed just over the top of the crossbar, after a beautiful cross from freshman Drew Dews Jr.

The game remained scoreless after regulation and went into a 20-minute overtime period, consisting of two 10-minute halves.

Louisiana College would only need six minutes into the first overtime period to find the net, as they drew a questionable penalty on Aaron Hyatt when a Wildcat player was taken off his feet.

The head referee awarded Louisiana College a penalty kick, as Daniel Vallin beat the Majors goalkeeper, Jake Milner to the right to give the Wildcats the victory.

Despite the loss, the home field advantage for the Majors was great, as the fans and student support saw an estimated crowd of 237 at Harper Davis Field.

The Majors will try and tack on their first win of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 13, when they host cross-town rival Belhaven College at 7 p.m. at Harper Davis Field.
