JACKSON - After picking up their first win of the season on Wednesday against Huntingdon College, the Majors played in a pair of weekend matches, dropping a tough 3-2 match to LeTourneau University on Saturday before rebounding to defeat Delta State 2-1 in overtime on Sunday.
Against the visitors from LeTourneau (10-3-2), Millsaps got on the scoreboard first when Drew Wooton drilled a direct kick from 25 yards out past goalkeeper Willie Cloyd.
The Yellow Jackets responded less than two minutes later, when Daniel Iya delivered one of his two goals on the night, picking up a loose ball in front of the net to beat Majors goalkeeper Jake Milner.
The game looked as if would stay tied 1-1 heading into halftime, but Lance Allen wouldn’t have any part of it, finding the back of the net for a team-leading fourth goal of the season off a double assisted effort from fellow freshmen Aaron Hyatt and Drew Dews, Jr.
The Yellow Jackets got much more physical in the second half, as they racked up 17 fouls and three yellow cards to the Majors seven fouls and one yellow.
LeTourneau knotted the game at 2-2 at the 63:04 mark, when Iya picked up yet another loose ball just outside the box to beat Milner.
Then, with under five minutes left in the game and the score tied, the Jackets delivered a crushing blow to the Majors hopes when Ryan Potter found the back of the net off a perfect cross into the box from Tony Guillen to give LeTourneau the 3-2 come-from-behind win.
Millsaps, however wouldn’t let a last-minute loss on Saturday spoil its weekend, as they downed Delta State in an overtime thriller 2-1 in Cleveland the following day.
Hyatt, the Metairie, La., freshman came up huge in the win, picking up both goals in the game including the clutch game-winner in overtime. The goals for Hyatt were the first two of his collegiate career, as he also has three assists on the season.
The game remained scoreless through the first 79 minutes of play, before Hyatt found the back of the net off an Anthony Amaya assist at the 79:15 mark.
It looked as if the Majors had their second win of the season in the bag, until Delta State delivered the game-tying goal with less than a minute to play that sent the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Hyatt and Amaya hooked up for the second time of the match, as Hyatt beat Statesmen goalkeeper Evan Griffin in the 104th minute to give Millsaps the thrilling win.
Milner picked up his second win of the season, while recording a season-high nine saves.
The Majors will be back at home and back in conference play this weekend, as they host their final two home matches of the 2006 season against Austin College on Friday and Hendrix College on Sunday. Friday’s match is slated for an 8 p.m. start, while Sunday’s match is scheduled for 12 p.m.
