Cavett's Goal in Double Overtime Silences Millsaps, 3-2
Majors to recognize graduating seniors on Sunday before kickoff

October 26, 2007

JACKSON -- Joey Madere’s goal in the 75th minute tied the game at 2-2 for Rhodes and Jessee Cavett’s goal off a Brett Simek assist in the 106th minute capped off the come-from-behind win as the Lynx escaped with a dramatic 3-2 win on a chilly Friday evening at Harper Davis Field.

Millsaps (3-11, 1-6 SCAC) used sophomore Brandon Mong’s team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 20th minute to break a scoreless tie, sailing a direct kick from 45 yards out over keeper Alex Mathis’ head and finding the back of the net.

Rhodes (7-6-1, 4-3-1) knotted the game at 1-1 with minutes left before the halftime buzzer to earn a tie heading into the locker room, using an unassisted effort from Patrick Deveau in the 39th minute.

A well executed corner from the Majors in the 66th minute put them back on top 2-1 after junior Anthony Amaya chipped a ball into the box off the feet of Andres Colocho and a streaking Colin Thompson (3) headed it in.

The Lynx grabbed the equalizer in the 75th minute from Madere, using a corner kick off the foot of Deveau to beat Majors’ keeper Jake Milner in the upper left corner of the net.

Following a scoreless 15 minutes, the teams battled it out in the first of two overtime periods where Milner came up huge. A pair of rifle shots by Chris Chugden and Jarrett Carpenter were redirected by the Flowood senior, with the save on Carpenter coming with 23 seconds left in OT1.

In the second overtime period, Millsaps' Aaron Hyatt appeared to net the game-winner 1:20 into the period, but a late offsides call from the assistant referee negated the goal.

Four minutes later, Rhodes’ Simek played a ball from the far right wing of the Majors’ box into a streaking Cavett who striked the ball into the back of the net for the dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind win.

Millsaps will play its final home game of the season on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Hendrix College, where seniors Heath Smith, Greg Groglio and Milner will say fairwell.
