ATLANTA, Ga. – Millsaps
closed out the regular season with a split in
conference play on the road, overcoming a three goal deficit to
Sewanee on Friday to rally for a 4-3 win before falling 5-0 to
Oglethorpe on Sunday.
Senior defender Heath Smith netted the game-winning
goal in the 78th minute to top Sewanee, ending a great career in
a Millsaps uniform, while fellow senior Jake Milner stopped 16
shots between the posts to add to his conference-leading total
of 129.
With the Friday league win, Millsaps posted its first 3-win
season in SCAC play since the 1999 season under then head coach
Bill Lytton.
Sewanee (5-13, 2-8 SCAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead just 19:48 into
Friday night's match, using a pair of goals and an assist from
Robbie
Wynne to
head into the half with what seemed to be an insurmountable advantage.
They
also outshot the Majors 17-5 in the period, including a 10-2
shots-on-goal edge.
Millsaps (5-11, 3-6 SCAC), however, put together its largest
comeback in the Lee Johnson era and came out of the half on a
mission, using
a
Corey
Beaumont (2) unassisted goal just 25 seconds in to cut the gap
to 3-1.
Less than nine minutes later, the Majors drew a foul inside
the Tigers' box that set up an Anthony Amaya penalty kick.
The junior from Hattiesburg settled in and drilled a shot past
Kevin
Karpay to earn his second successful PK of the year and cut the
Tigers' lead to 3-2.
The Majors picked up the equalizer in the 65th minute, as
Smith used a well crossed effort from Andres
Colocho to beat Karpay and cause a frenzy on the Millsaps sideline.
After a key save from Milner between the posts and continued
Millsaps pressure, the Majors capped off their greatest comeback
of the decade when Smith knocked in the go-ahead goal in the
78th minute which proved to be the game-winner.
Milner was credited with his and the Majors' fifth win of the
year, earning eight saves, including seven in the first half,
while Karpay fell to 5-13 after surrendering four goals.
Oglethorpe (5-12, 3-7
SCAC) took advantage of 29 shots, including nine from Danner
Marsden
and
eight from
Matt
Brisindine,
to find
the back of the net five times in a shutout win over Millsaps
on Sunday.
David Mueller jumpstarted the Stormy Petrels' offensive attack
with a goal from a Russell Kramer just 5:04 into the match while
Marsden netted two more to take a 3-0 halftime lead.
In the second period, Brisindine scored in the 52nd minute followed
by a goal from Jonathan McConnell in the 82nd minute for the
final 5-0 victory for OU.
Sophomore Colin Thompson picked up four of the
Majors' 11 shots while D. Mueller led the way for OU with a goal
and two assists. Michael Mueller and Kramer also each
added a pair of assists.
Millsaps finishes the season with a 5-12 overall mark
and a 3-7 mark in SCAC play. |
