ATLANTA, Ga. --
The Millsaps women's
soccer team split a pair of games this weekend in Atlanta, opening the 2007
soccer
slate
with
their
first
season-opening
road
win in school history dating back to 1991 with a 1-0 win over Spelman before
falling
in
the
weekend
closer to Agnes Scott 2-1 on a pair of late goals.
Playing in her first collegiate
game since 2005 due to a knee injury, junior Erin Sanford found the back of the
net for the
Majors' game-winning goal over Spelman, using an assist from fellow
junior
Bobbi Jones in the 50th minute.
The Majors outshot Spelman by a 25-24 margin, earning an extra shot on goal
which proved to be the difference in the game. The Jaguars were credited with
six corners to three.
Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Sooby picked up a season-high 14 saves in the game
for her third career shutout win, stoping five shots-on-goal from both Danielle
Stallings and Nailah Young en route to an early 1-0 record.
On Sunday, Agnes Scott scored two goals in the last 20
minutes of regulation to come-from-behind and defeat Millsaps 2-1
after the Majors held a second half lead on Callie Roth's goal in the 49th minute.
Roth poked
home a loose ball in the Scotties box to force the Scotties into their first
deficit
of the year.
Agnes Scott dug deep
and began to take control of the game by the 60th minute, attacking
from all angles with regularity and peppering the Millsaps goal with
shots. Despite the
pressure, the game wore on and things were beginning to look bleak for the Scotties.
The game, however, turned in the
70th minute when freshman Kelsey Shaul took one of the
Scotties' seven second half corners and found the back of the net. The ball deflected
in
off
a
Millsaps defender for an own goal, knotting the game at one
apiece.
The Scotties
were rewarded with the winning goal in the 88th minute on yet
another corner
kick. Sophomore Jena Winchell’s service
deflected off Sooby’s
hands and fell into the goal for the final margin of 2-1, sending
the Majors home with a weekend split.
The win raised
Agnes Scott's record to 2-0, the best start
to a season since the 2000 season and evened the Majors' record
to 1-1 on the year with another away game at Louisiana College
on Friday, Sept. 7 in Pineville.
