CHICAGO, Ill. --
In the first set of
weekly awards given out by D3kicks.com, junior forward Erin Sanford of Millsaps
was named to the Team of the Week after knocking home the game winning goal
in a 1-0 win over Spelman College.
After a year and a half away from soccer due to a knee injury and playing in
her first collegiate game since 2005, Sanford helped lead the Majors to their
first season-opening road win in school history dating back to 1991, scoring
off an assist from teammate Bobbi Jones in the 50th minute.
Sanford becomes the first selection on the D3kicks.com Team of the Week since
fellow junior Hayley Barber garnered the weekly award in Week 2 of last season.
Barber had a stellar week for the Majors, shutting down the most dangerous right midfielder in a 5-1 loss at Mississippi College. She also helped Millsaps pick up its first win of the season, scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 shutout win over Louisiana College.
Millsaps will be back in action Friday, taking on Louisiana College at 5 p.m.
in Pineville.
