JACKSON --
Sophomore
forward Megan Sullivan netted a pair of goals, including her
first of the season just 5:17 into the first half, and Millsaps
cruised to an easy win over in-state foe Alcorn State University
at Harper Davis Field on Sunday afternoon.
Millsaps (3-2-0) bounced back from a Friday night, 3-2 loss at
home to State Street rival Belhaven College, taking a 2-0 halftime
lead and scoring three early second half goals en route to
a 6-1 win to even its record to 1-1 on the year in front of the
home crowd.
Majors junior keeper Elizabeth Sooby held Alcorn State (1-3-0)
scoreless in the first half, picking up a key save to stay
at second in the league in total saves with 34 and earn her
third win of the year, while freshman Sarah Nelin minded the
net in
the second half.
Sullivan picked up her second goal of the game and season in
the 57th minute to give the Majors a 3-0 cushion, using a well-played
ball from senior Callie Roth over the top of the defense to beat
Lady Braves keeper Amber Steeves.
Just over a minute later, sophomore Leslie Robichaux
found the back of the net for the third time in two games to
push the lead to 4-0, taking advantage of a scramble in front
of the Alcorn State net
and placing the ball in the goal after it was deflected over
from Julia Fell.
Roth and freshman Hayley Nemeth provided the final two scores
for Millsaps in the 70th and 75th minute, with Roth scoring off
a save from Steeves that landed in front of the crease and Nemeth
using a well played ball from Jones off a corner to find the
net.
The Lady Braves finally got on the scoreboard in the 85th
minute to erase the shutout, using a well delivered cross from
junior Ashley Rankin to freshman Shantrell Jethrow who fired
the ball passed Nelin.
In an offensive onslaught, Millsaps out shot Alcorn State 23-7
while earning 10 more shots-on-goal (14-4) and
10
more
corner kicks (11-1).
The Majors will have their work cut out for them this weekend,
playing host to 24th-ranked Trinity University (2-2-0) at 6
p.m. Friday in their conference-opener followed by Southwestern
University (3-2-0) at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
