GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern
University used a four-goal second half performance, including
two from Ana Stewart, en route to a 5-0 shutout win in the opening
weekend of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Millsaps (1-6, 0-1 SCAC) could manage only four shots the entire
match, while the Pirates exploded for 27 shots, 18 coming in the
second half.
After almost a scoreless first half, Southwestern (2-4-1, 1-0 SCAC)
delivered a deadly blow when Jennifer Huntsman beat Majors goalkeeper
Elizabeth Sooby with only 0:25 left on the clock before halftime.
The lead would increase to 3-0 midway through the second half,
when the Pirates found the back of the net twice in 0:58. Erin
Youngstrom picked up three quick points (goal, assist) when she
scored a goal and assisted on Casey Grier’s.
The Pirates would later add two more second half goals to close
out the match and conserve their first conference win of the season.
Despite the loss, Sooby picked up a season-high 10 saves, while
Mary Raines saw her first action of the season and denied two Pirate
shots-on-goal.
The Majors will close out a two-game road swing on Sunday, when
they face No. 4 Trinity University at 2 p.m. They will then return
home to host No. 13 DePauw University on Friday, Sept. 29 at Harper
Davis Field.
