JACKSON --
Sophomore
A.J. Andreola scored two second half goals en route
to a hat trick and junior goalkeeper Eryn Snyder picked up five
saves for her first shutout win of the year as the visiting
Southwestern University Lady Pirates topped Millsaps on Sunday
4-0.
Andreola broke open a scoreless match in the 20th minute, using
a well played corner kick from junior Kady Smith off the side
of her head to beat Majors' goalkeeper Elizabeth Sooby.
Millsaps (3-4, 0-2 SCAC) threatened to tie the game in the 34th
minute when sophomore Jessie Otis drew a foul inside the Lady
Pirates' box and earned a penalty kick. Freshman Emily Townsend
stepped into the box to take the attempt for the Majors
after Otis was injured but was stuffed by Snyder to keep
the game at 1-0 Southwestern into the half.
Southwestern (4-3, 1-0 SCAC) increased its lead out to
2-0 just minutes into the second half when Andreola took advantage
of
a scramble
in front of the net to score her second goal of the match.
The
sophomore from Garland, Texas, completed the hat trick
in the 72nd minute,
using a Lauren Kjolhede cross off a direct kick outside the Majors'
box for her team-leading fifth goal of the year. On the goal,
Andreola took a shot to the mouth after colliding with a Millsaps
defender
in the air and was sidelined the remainder
of the contest.
Freshman Annabelle Ross provided the final blow less than a minute
later, scoring off an assist from sophomore Laura Kromann for
the first goal of her Southwestern
career.
Southwestern held a slight edge on the stat sheet, outshooting
Millsaps 15-11 (7-5 on net), including a game and team-high
four shots-on-goal from Andreola. The Majors earned two more
corner kicks (6-4).
Sooby (3-4) was hit with the loss for Millsaps after surrendering
four goals and stopping just two whereas freshman Sarah Nelin
picked up a save in the final 11:15 of the game in her second
appearance
of the
season.
The Majors continue a six-game homestand Sunday at Harper Davis
Field, playing host to SCAC foe Austin College at 11 a.m.
