Majors Tame Wolfpack, Earn 3-0 Shutout Win
Millsaps improves to 2-1 in non-conference play at home

October 8, 2006

JACKSON - Millsaps picked up its second shutout win of the season and Amanda Paschall and Callie Roth picked up their first goals of the season, as the Majors blanked Loyola University (La.) 3-0 at Harper Davis Field on Sunday afternoon.

Millsaps controlled the game from the beginning, out shooting the Wolfpack 10-1 in the first half and 19-4 for the entire game. Because of their constant pressure, the Majors also earned five corner kicks and six offside penalties to Loyola’s zero.

“It’s nice that we played well and with some confidence,” head coach Paul Van Hooydonk said. “Everyone did their job well and we put some balls in the back of the net.”

The Majors (2-9, 0-4 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) got out in front midway through the first half, after Bobbi Jones delivered a beautiful pass that fell just over the top of the defense to a streaking Paschall. The senior did the rest from there, beating the keeper to the left to give Millsaps a 1-0 lead.

The game remained scoreless for the next 47:30 before Roth picked up her first goal of the year, firing a long shot to beat Loyola’s goalkeeper Jordann Webster at the 71:30 mark in the second half.

Less than seven minutes later, the Majors increased their lead to 3-0 when Hayley Barber earned her team-leading second goal of the season off a direct kick just outside the Wolfpack box.

That’s all Millsaps would need, as Elizabeth Sooby picked up her second win of the season – both shutout wins – and three saves on the afternoon.

The Majors will continue a stretch of five consecutive home games at Harper Davis Field, playing host to Huntingdon College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11 and LeTourneau University at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Saturday’s match versus LeTourneau is slated for “Purple Pride Day.”
