SCAC ANNOUNCES 2004 ALL-CONFERENCE WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM
In exclusive voting by the head women's soccer coaches of the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), Carly Shade of Trinity University
was selected the Offensive Player-of-the-Year, and Sarah Oxford of Sewanee-University
of the South and Meredith Rinaker of DePauw University each received three
votes to share SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors.
In the same balloting, Julie Roebel of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
was voted the league's Newcomer-of-the-Year. Lance Key of Trinity, after
leading his Tigers to an undefeated season, was tabbed as SCAC Women's
Coach-of-the-Year.
After missing half of last season due to injury, senior forward Carly
Shade bounced back with a stellar senior season in 2004. Shade led Trinity
with 13 goals (tied for league lead) and 29 points this season (second
in the SCAC), establishing career highs in both categories. For her career,
Shade is eighth on Trinity's all-time list in goals (34) and assists (20)
and sixth in total points (88).
Shade received eight votes for Offensive POTY, and Kate Nickols of DePauw
received the remaining two votes.
Senior back Sarah Oxford, an NSCAA All-South region performer a year
ago, started at left back all 18 games for the 2004 Sewanee Tigers and
led the team to its most successful season in school history. Sewanee's
women achieved its highest-ever conference finish (second) and was ranked
as high as No. 5 in the South Region. Oxford led the defense to a school
record 10 shutouts and was selected as the Week 6 Defensive Player of
the Week in the SCAC.
Meredith Rinaker, a senior midfielder, led the DePauw defensive effort
from the midfield against a tough schedule that included a 2-3 mark against
teams currently in the round of 16 of the Division III Championships.
Not only did she have a defensive presence, she also was valuable in the
Tigers' attack attempting 25 shots and producing one goal - a game-winner
against Earlham. Rinaker was a First Team All-American on last year's
squad that made it all the way to the Women's Final Four.
Oxford and Rinaker both received three votes in the Defensive POTY balloting
while Kayla Birdwell of Trinity and Kathleen Stynes of Rose-Hulman Institute
of Technology each received two votes.
Julie Roebel of Rose-Hulman, a first-year forward, led the SCAC in scoring
with 13 goals and six assists for 32 points, marking the second-consecutive
year that an Engineer has led the league in points (Jessica Farmer accomplished
the feat in 2003 with 46 points). Roebel is also the first freshman since
1995 (Sara Morgan of Centre) to lead the league in scoring. She also tied
for the league lead in game-winning goals with four.
Roebel paced the Newcomer balloting with four votes, followed by Jessica
Koenig of Trinity who received two. Ashley Money of Oglethorpe, Maggie
Adams and Kelly Bryant, both of Sewanee, and Lauren Andrews of Trinity
all received one vote each.
Lance Key, in his first season as the head women's soccer coach at Trinity,
guided the Tigers to the 2004 league title with a perfect 8-0-0 conference
record. Trinity finished the regular season with an unblemished 16-0-0
mark and the No. 1 ranking in the nation. Key becomes the first person
in SCAC history to be selected as both Coach-of-the-Year and Player-of-the-Year
during a career. A three-time All-American for Trinity, Key was the SCAC
Men's Soccer Player-of-the-Year in 1999.
In the balloting for COTY, Key received five votes, followed closely
by Jack Flatau of Southwestern University with three. Jon Akin of Oglethorpe
University and Nick Cowell of Sewanee each received one vote.
