In a double overtime thriller, the Millsaps Majors pulled out a
hard fought victory over Division II Delta State. The Majors found
themselves down 1-0 eight minutes into the game on a fine counterattack
goal by the Stateswomen's Nicole Clark.
Millsaps kept pressing and evened the score on Erin Sanford's first
goal of the game. Sanford outraced the Stateswomen's goalkeeper
to a loose ball on the end line and slotted a tough angled shot
through traffic that kissed off the far post and into the net.
Just over a minute later Hayley Barber out-battled a Delta State
defender for an Amanda Paschall free kick and placed it in the back
of the net to put the Majors up 2-1 at halftime. Delta State was
not done however and scored their second goal to tie the game at
two.
The Majors looked have won it in regulation when first year midfielder
Kate Goodwin beat the Stateswomen's goalkeeper only to have the
ball cleared off the line by a Delta State defender.
After a scoreless first overtime, Sanford got her second of the
game (fifth of the year) to end the contest. Collecting a serve
from sophomore midfielder Callie Roth at the near post, Sanford
took a touch, spun and fired the game-winner.
Elizabeth Sooby went the entire 90 minutes in goal recording nine
saves. Sanford and sophomore defender Julia Fell were named offensive
and defensive player of the match by their teammates.
The Majors open their rugged SCAC schedule on the road at regionally
ranked Center College of Kentucky on Friday night. They then complete
their road trip at regionally ranked University of the South-Sewanee
in Tennessee on Sunday.
