Majors draw with highly regarded Rhodes

The Millsaps Majors rebounded Sunday afternoon against the Rhodes Lynx (ranked #5 in the South Region). The highflying Lynx arrived in Jackson, MS on a five-game winning streak and were poised to join DePauw University as the conference co-leader by the end of the day. However, the Majors had other plans. First year forward Bobbi Jones got the Majors off to a quick start scoring her fourth goal of the year at the seven minute mark. Jones scored directly off a corner kick, curling it into the far post for a 1-0 lead. This lead held to halftime despite several chances for both sides.

In the second half Rhodes showed why they are vying for the conference championship attacking relentlessly and placing the Majors under great pressure. The Millsaps defense, led by sweeper Julia Fell and goalkeeper Elizabeth Sooby, held firm until the Lynx finally broke through in the fifty seventh minute. Katy Buckner scored to knot the game at one. Rhodes looked to have kept their title hopes alive with their second goal with just fifteen minutes to go but Millsaps was not done. Applying pressure to gain the equalizer, Millsaps earned a penalty kick with just 2:28 remaining on the clock. Junior co-captain Amanda Paschall stepped up and slotted the ball into the net to tie the score at 2 apiece sending the game to overtime. In overtime Rhodes peppered the Millsaps goal with ten shots but goalie Elizabeth Sooby was up to the task making seven saves, seventeen for the game, many of them of the spectacular variety. The outstanding team effort earned Millsaps their first conference point of the year and broke an extensive conference losing streak.

Millsaps will look to enter the conference win column against Oglethorpe University this Sunday, Nov. 6 at 12 pm. This is the final game of the 2005 season for the Majors.
