JACKSON – Host
Millsaps held the University of the Ozarks to just four hits in two
games of a scheduled doubleheader and the offense pumped in 17 combined
runs off 24 hits to cruise to a two-game sweep, 8-0 (6), 9-1 (5), on
Saturday afternoon and push the Majors' win streak out to a school-record
best 13 games.
After
starting the season 3-7 with a pair of close loses to MS College,
Christian Brothers University and LaGrange College, Millsaps has not
lost a game since March 9. The win streak snaps a previous school-best
streak set by the 2003 squad who won
12-straight games
from March 8 through April 4 under then head coach Joe Kinsella.
Millsaps
(16-7, 4-0 SCAC East) strolled to an 8-0 win in Game 1 of the afternoon
twinbill in six innings behind a 1-hit shutout from sophomore Kasey
Thibodeaux (7-2) who tossed seven strikeouts against
just one walk to earn her sixth-straight win. It marked the first time
all season that the Lady Eagles had been shutout in a game.
The
Majors scored a run in all but one inning (third inning) and freshman
Karoline Kremers went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to pace the offense,
coupled with two hits apiece from fellow frosh Haley
Stevens and sophomore
Morgan Ladner.
Ozarks
(9-9, 2-4 ASC) scored first in Game 2 to take a brief 1-0 lead, using
a two-out, RBI-single from Chelsea Joslin off the fence to score Kaityln
Poirier from first, before Millsaps scored nine unanswered runs over
the next
five innings to take a 9-1 victory in five.
Sophomore
hurler Brittney McAllister (3-4)
surrendered just two hits the rest of the way and got a lot of help
from the offense who combined for
15 hits, including 10 in the first two innings, that led to seven Millsaps
runs.
Sophomore
Jen McKinley went a perfect 4-for-4
from the plate with her team-leading fourth home run of the year, while
H. Stevens went 3-for-3
with a pair of RBIs. Junior Tiffany
Ladnier was also 3-for-4 from the
plate and sophomore Sam Hill recorded
her first career home run (inside-the-park) on a shot to deep rightfield
that allowed her to scamper around the bases for the score.
Winners
of a school-record best 13-straight games, Millsaps will welcome Sewanee-U
of the South to town this weekend for a 4-game
series. The scheduled April 1 doubleheader against non-conference
foe MS College has been moved to Tuesday, April 15 at 2 p.m. on the
campus of Millsaps College. |
