SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- With two outs and two on in the bottom of the sixth, Trinity sophomore Lee Smith sent an RBI-single to leftfield to score teammate Erin Fodness from second base to plate the game-winning run and help the No. 1 seeded Tigers escape No. 3 seed Millsaps, 1-0.
Trinity who took 3 of 4 games from Millsaps in the SCAC regular season closer in Jackson, once again picked up a strong pitching performance from starting hurler Erin Mulvey. The senior from Round Rock, Texas, scattered four hits and struck out nine to improve to 13-4 on the year and run her season strikeout total to 119.
Despite surrendering the lone run of the game, Youngsville, La., freshman Kasey Thibodeaux gave Mulvey and the Tigers a run for their money, battling one of the top pitchers in the conference and region pitch for pitch.
While hits and runs were hard to come by on the afternoon, senior designated player Amy Blaha was not fazed, leading the Tigers' offensive attack with three singles in a 3-for-3 outing behind Smith's lone RBI-single in the sixth.
For the Majors, Erica Douglas broke out of a 2-for-20 slump to pick up two hits while Jennifer McKinley and Sam Hill earned the remaining two off Mulvey.
Nearly two weeks after splitting a 4-game series in Conway, Ark., Millsaps and Hendrix will meet again -- this time with much higher stakes -- at 10 a.m. Saturday morning in an elimination game. The winner will advance to play the winner of Centre/Rhodes at 4 p.m. while the loser will go home.
