MONTGOMERY,
Ala. -- The
homestanding Huntingdon Hawks swept a pair of games over the visitors
from Millsaps College on Saturday, downing the Majors 8-4 in an error-filled
Game 1 and 2-0 in a pitcher's duel in Game 2.
Millsaps lit up the scoreboard first, plating a run in the
top of the first frame on a throwing error by the first baseman to
score Renee Hebert.
Huntingdon responded with a run of its own in the bottom half
of the inning off an RBI-single from Amanda Helton to tie the game
at 1-1 and later scored five unanswered runs off three Millsaps errors
to take a 6-1 lead into the sixth inning.
The Majors cut the gap to 6-2 off freshman Jennifer McKinley's RBI-double
in the sixth and 8-4 on a two-out, two-RBI double from freshman Sam
Hill in the seventh before the Hawks closed out the win with a groundout
to the pitcher.
Six different Majors recorded a hit with Hill (pictured) going 2-for-4
with two RBIs and one run scored.
Game 2 was the complete opposite, with the teams combining for two
runs off only six hits compared to a combined 18 hits, 12 runs and
eight errors in the first game.
Freshman Kasey Thibodeaux and Game 1 winner Alyssa Ryan
battled it out in the circle, surrendering a combined two hits through
the first 5 1/2 innings of play before the Hawks rallied for a single
run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth for the 2-0 victory.
Huntingdon scored both of its runs off two outs, using an RBI-single
from Kasey Andrews in the fifth and an RBI-groundout from Haydyn
Hedgspeth in the sixth.
The Hawks improve to 6-11 on the year with their fifth win in six
games while the Majors fall to 0-9 on the road and 1-12 overall.
Millsaps will try and pick up a pair of road wins tomorrow, traveling
to LaGrange College for an afternoon doubleheader with the Panthers.
First pitch is slated 1 p.m. CST.
