MEMPHS, Tenn. -- The Lady Majors looked to continue their weekend success as they faced off against the DePauw Tigers and Centre Colonels on Sunday at Rhodes College. Millsaps ended up settling for a split on the day – beating DePauw 7-6, but losing to Centre 9-8. The Lady Majors left the SCAC Crossover event with 3 wins and 1 loss. Millsaps softball is now 6-11 on the year.
In the DePauw University match-up, the Lady Majors were forced to make a comeback as the Lady Tigers took the initial lead in the game. DePauw scored five runs in the top of the third, forcing Millsaps to take action. Millsaps answered with three runs of their own, leaving the team faced with a 5-3 deficit at the end of the third.
As the Lady Majors held DePauw scoreless until the seventh inning, Millsaps added a total of three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Christina Sharp hit a solo homerun to begin the fifth inning, and her run was followed by an error which put Helen Loring on base. Loring eventually scored, making the score tied at five. In the sixth, the team took their first lead of the game at 6-5 as Sharp hit her second homerun of the day.
DePauw tie the game at six in the seventh inning, forcing Millsaps to go into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Kacey Quinn hit an RBI single, scoring Kylie Kurtz to give Millsaps the 7-6 victory.
In their match-up against the Centre Colonels, Millsaps played another close contest. The Lady Majors took the early game in this contest, scoring two runs in the opening inning. They added four more in the top of the third, their most productive inning of the game, as Sharp, Josie Manley, Quinn and Tiffany Ladiner all scored for Millsaps. The runs gave Millsaps a 6-0 lead, but that lead vanished in the bottom of the third as Centre scored five runs.
In hopes of holding on to the victory, Millsaps added two more runs in the sixth inning as Jessica Clincy homered and Loring scored off a Ladiner RBI single. Centre added three more runs of their own in the inning, however, tying the score at eight runs a piece. Millsaps was unable to garner any more runs, Centre added one in the bottom of the seventh to take the game 9-8.
The Lady Majors will begin conference play this weekend with a 4-game homestand against Hendrix College. Games begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. |
