The Millsaps Majors have
landed the #1 seed in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Tournament, set for April 22-24 in Conway, AR, with a four-game
weekend sweep of the Rhodes Lynx.
Led by senior pitchers
Tammy Ladner (8-5 1.93 ERA) and Kati Fleming (8-7 4.15 ERA) the
Majors dominated the Lynx. In four starts, two each, Ladner and
Fleming allowed eight hits and one run all weekend while striking
out 20 Lynx hitters. The Lynx commited 11 errors and only three
runners reached third base during the weekend.
The Majors, however,
got big hits all weekend from seniors Crystal Bender, Fleming, Brittany
Ladner, and Naffie Mooney. The four players, along with senior Tammy
Ladner were recognized with their parents before the game Saturday
and congratulated on their brilliant career's in the Purple and
White.
In game one Saturday,
Bender drove in two runs as did sophomore Kylie Kurtz and Mooney
and Fleming had an RBI each.
In game two leadoff hitter
Christina Sharp drove in a run on her third triple of the season
and Renee Green singled in a run for the Majors. Victoria Gibson
hit her third triple of the season scoring a run and Fleming and
Brittany Ladner drove in a run each.
Fleming threw a one-hitter
in game two striking out eight Lynx batters.
Mooney's single to rightfield
scored Sharp in the first inning of game three and later third baseman
Josie Manley would drive in two runs, increasing the Majors lead
to 5-0. In the sixth inning Amanda Lutzy would break up the Fleming
no-hit bid by doubling down the right field line. The Lynx would
score one run when Jessica Morris drove Lutzy in from third after
Lutzy moved over on a sacrifice bunt.
Game four was called
after five innings with the Majors leading 10-0. Manley tripled
in the fourth inning scoring three Majors and two batters later
Bender smacked a two-run homerun to centerfield off starter Rachel
Austin scoring Manley.
Tammy
Ladner threw 12 innings on the weekend allowing five hits and striking
out eight hitters. She faced just five hitters over the minimum.
Fleming
finished with 14 innings pitched allowing three hits and striking
out 12 hitters. Fleming
face seven batters over the minimum.
