JACKSON – Freshman
Campbell Hughes won all three of his matches to improve to 4-1
overall in his spring 2008 debut and Millsaps knocked off regional
foes Louisiana College and Huntingdon College by 9-0 scores before
falling to Birmingham-Southern to win 2 of 3 matches in its weekend
home opener at Coach Montgomery Courts.
In the opening match against Louisiana
College on Friday at 1 p.m., Millsaps swept all three doubles
points by large margins to take
an early
3-0 lead, followed by six-straight sweeps at the singles spots
to win handily, 9-0.
The Majors didn't drop a set in the
win, using wins from Trevor Harris, Robert Parker and Chris Kelley
at the No's 4, 5 and 6 slots to blow the match wide open.
Hughes followed with a straight-set
victory over Ford, 6-1, 6-0, and Murphey Parker and Wes Hill
had little trouble with Tanzin and Walton at the No's 1 and 3
spots.
Millsaps kept the momentum going in
the nightcap and spoiled the Hawks' unblemished record, defeating
Huntingdon with 8-0 wins at No's 2 and 3 doubles to
cruise to the victory.
Junior Tim Shoptaugh skunked Zach
Molin at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0, to push the Majors' lead out
to 4-0 early before freshman Alex Cummings dropped K. Hazan 6-1,
6-2, at No. 2 singles to wrap up the win.
For a second-straight match, Millsaps
did not drop a set in improving to 3-1 overall.
BSC proved
too much for the Majors to close the weekend
on Saturday night, winning 7-2 with several close matches at
No. 2 doubles and singles.
Down 2-0 early with losses at No.
1 and 3, Hill and M. Parker battled Martin Crockett/Matt
Mabry to an 8-6 match at No. 2 to complete the doubles sweep
for the Panthers.
Ranked 15th regionally, Michael Locandro
had no trouble with M. Parker at the No. 1 position, winning
handily 6-0, 6-0, while Hughes and Shoptaugh were the lone
Majors who picked up wins at No. 3 and 4 singles.
Millsaps will continue an 8-game homestand
on Sunday, playing host to SCAC-foe Sewanee at 9 a.m. at Coach
Montgomery Courts.
