JACKSON -- The
Millsaps men's tennis team opened up the 2007 spring campaign
strong with an impressive 7-0 win at Tougaloo College on Saturday.
The Majors jumped out on top early, taking the two doubles points.
The No. 1 doubles team of Murphey Parker and Tim Shoptaugh
downed Barker/J. Young of Tougaloo, 8-0, while the No. 2 pairing
of Robert Parker and Jonathan Giurintano took care of business,
8-3, over Thames/K. Young.
In singles play it was all Millsaps, as they took all six matches
in straight-sets.
Alex Cummings downed J. Young 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 1 slot, Shoptaugh
was victorious over Barker 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 2 slot and M.
Parker defeated K. Young 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3.
At the No. 4 and 5 positions, Trevor Harris and R. Parker won
6-0, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-3.
Two matches were defaulted, including the duo of Harris and Chris
Kelly (9-7) at No. 3 doubles and Michael Puckett's No. 6 singles
match against Kahil Peet (6-0, 6-0).
The Majors will try and capitalize on their season-opening win
when they face off with Division I Jackson State University on
Thursday, March 1 on the campus of Millsaps.
