TYLER, Texas --
Ranked No. 15 in the West Region polls, UT-Tyler downed the
visitors from Millsaps College, 5-4, after taking two of three
doubles points and splitting the singles matches by a score of
3-3.
Millsaps trailed 2-1 after doubles action with the duo of
Russell Turley/Alex Cummings earning the lone Majors point in
a 9-8 victory.
Turley got Millsaps back in the hunt after earning a 6-2, 3-0
(ret.) win at No. 2 singles over Tripp Farmer followed by a straight-set
win at No. 3 singles from Murphey Parker that gave the Majors
their first lead of the match at 3-2.
Cummings [pictured] won 6-1 over Bryan Jolly in the
third set at No. 1 singles to stretch the Millsaps lead to 4-2
and
bring
them one match
away from victory.
Tim Shoptaugh, the sophomore from Baton Rouge, La., was up
5-3 over Will McDonald at No. 4 singles and was serving for match
point before he was denied in a thrilling 7-5 third set loss.
Wes Hill and Trevor Harris were the final two matches for Millsaps,
as the two lost in straight-sets to Tim Pedroza and Nick Kreines
to close out the match.
Millsaps (7-4) will conclude its two-day road swing in Texas
with a 9 a.m. match against conference foe Austin College tomorrow.
