Salinas, Jackson State Edge Millsaps, 5-4
Division I Tigers improve to 13-5 with the victory

April 9, 2007

JACKSON -- In a rescheduled match from a March 1 rainout, neighboring Division I foe Jackson State University picked up its 13th victory of the season by edging past the homestanding Millsaps Majors, 5-4, at the Millsaps Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon.

The Tigers won two of the three doubles points to take a quick 2-1 lead when the duo of Arturo Jimenez/Tendai Kuwaza defeated Millsaps' Russell Turley/Alex Cummings at the No. 1 slot and Sergio Salinas/Alejandro Martinez downed Wes Hill/Murphey Parker at No. 2 doubles.

The lone Majors doubles point came from Tim Shoptaugh/Trevor Harris at the No. 3 position where they handily beat Brandon Nelson/Ivan Walker by a score of 8-1.

Jackson State earned a 3-3 split in singles action, using a come-from-behind win from Salinas at No. 4 singles over Shoptaugh [3-6, 6-1, 6-0] to break the 4-4 tie and come away with the win.

Turley, Hill and Harris (pictured) were victorious for the Majors in singles play at the No. 1, 4 and 6 positions, downing Jiminez [6-2, 7-5], Nelson [6-2, 7-5] and Walker [6-1, 6-1] in straight sets.

With the loss, Millsaps drops to 8-6 on the season and JSU improves to 13-5.

The Majors will be back in action Tuesday, April 10, at Parham Bridges Tennis Center in Jackson, taking on cross-town rival Mississippi College in a 2 p.m. contest.
