JACKSON --
In
their third and final match at Parham Bridges Tennis Center
and final regular season match before this weekend's SCAC Tournament,
the Millsaps netmen fell to I-20 rival Mississippi
College by a 5-3 score to fall to 2-1 at the
neutral site and 10-7 overall.
The Majors
had a horrific start to the match in doubles play, falling behind
quickly 2-0 with losses at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, before the
duo of Tim Shoptaugh and Trevor Harris cruised to an 8-4 win
at No. 3 doubles to cut the gap to 2-1.
In singles
play, Millsaps senior Russell Turley handled a hot Patrick Stanton
by a score of 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot to even the match at
2-2 before the Choctaws regained the lead when Chas Dunn knocked
off Millsaps' No. 1 singles player Alex Cummings, 7-5, 6-2.
MC put the
Majors on the brink of elimination and increased its lead to
4-2 when Jerrod Rayborn won easily over Wes Hill by scores
of 6-0, 6-3.
Millsaps showed
its toughness and sophomore Tim Shoptaugh {pictured} would
not be denied this time, winning a thrilling three-set match
over
MC's
Porter
Glover by scores of 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, to bring the match to
4-3
in favor of the Chocs.
With the match
down to the final four competitors, Trevor Harris and Claude
Freeman were knotted at 1-1 and headed for a deciding third set
when the usually unwavering Murphey Parker fell victim to cramps
and went down quickly in the third set 2-6 to Michael Ward.
Millsaps will
be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming SCAC Tournament in Waco, Texas,
facing off with the No. 4 seed, Sewanee at 12 p.m. on Friday
(Match D). A Majors win will put them in a 12 p.m. match on Saturday
while a loss will put Millsaps in the 4 p.m. contest.
