The men's team returns five starters and seven lettermen for the
2005-06 campaign. This year's schedule has more nationally ranked
teams than last year.
The season is highlighted by a spring break trip to California,
the Blue-Gray Auburn-Montgomery tournament, Millsaps Spring Invitational,
ITA Regional, Millsaps Fall Invitational, and a trip to Memphis,
TN.
The Majors look to improve on the ninth place finish and become
a mainstay in the conference top five, beat MC and Belhaven, and
continue our academic excellence by having ITA Scholar Athletes
and a ITA National Scholar Team award.
Russell Turley from Birmingham, AL (11-7) returns after a solid
year at number one and two singles. Michael Puckett, sophomore from
Jackson, and Wes Hill, sophomore from Columbus, MS each played many
positions and look to continue their fine play this year.
Jeff Newbern, senior from Valdosta, GA has been in the heart of
the lineup for three years and looks to continue to contribute.
Sophomores Brock Newman from Florence, MS and Jonathan Giuruintano
played singles and doubles most of last year. And senior Travis
Scharr from Ocean Springs, MS played #3-5 singles and doubles most
of last year.
That's the good news, but the better news is we have six solid recruits
as good as our returners. Trevor Harris of Austin, TX, is a super
champ competitor, Tim Shoptaugh and Chris Rolen of Baton Rouge,
LA are both top 10. Collin Jones plays one at his Georgia high school,
Robert Parker has contributed to four straight high school championships
for St. Andrews, and James Rice played for a perennial Northern
Virginia high school in Vienna, VA.
If all goes well, this team should improve due to its depth and
schedule by the conference championships. National Academic Team
Award, Top 5 SCAC finish, ITA Scholar Athletes, assist with Mississippi
School for Deaf program, play and train with pride, and vie for
NCAA tournament are our goals. Hope to see you at the courts!
