SUWANEE, Ga. – In
exclusive voting by the head coaches in the league, Gab Carvalho
of Sewanee and Oliver Gaines of Trinity
University have been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference (SCAC) Tennis Players-of-the-Year, while a trio of
Majors, Campbell Hughes, Murphey Parker and Tim Shoptaugh
earned a spot on the all-SCAC Team.
Hughes, a freshman from Houston, Texas,
earned 17 votes and made all-SCAC, while Parker (9) and Shoptaugh
(5) received Honorable Mention recognition.
Hughes posted a 13-11 overall record
in singles play at No's 2 and 3 with a 2-1 record in conference,
winning five of his final nine matches to finish two games above
.500. In doubles play at No's 1 and 2, the frosh teamed up with
both Alex Cummings and Shoptaugh, posting a 3-3 record with Cummings
and
a 9-10 mark
with Shoptaugh.
Parker, a senior transfer from Emory,
finished 11-12 in singles play on the year primarily at the No.
1 spot, also winning five of his last nine matches. In 20 matches
at No's 2 and 3 doubles with teammate Wes Hill, the duo
posted a 13-7 mark and went 4-0 in the SCAC Championships at
DePauw to earn All-SCAC Tournament Team honors. In all, Hill/Parker
finished
7-3 in their last 10 matches and were 8-3 overall at the No.
3 position.
A junior from Baton Rouge, La., Shoptaugh
played at No's 3 and 4 singles all season, combining for an 11-12
record, including a 2-1 SCAC record. Shoptaugh paired up with
both Chris Rolen and Hughes at No's 1-3 doubles, earning a 3-3
mark at No. 3, 2-2 mark at No. 2 and 7-8 mark at the top spot.
