MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Majors road trip to Memphis ends badly as the tennis team fails to win a match at Rhodes College. The Majors had a chance to tie their match against Hendrix College, but Chris Rolen fell victim to cramps and could not finish the match. The loss drops the Majors to 7-7, 0-4 in the SCAC.
Hendrix started off 1-0 with a 6-1,6-0 win at #4 with Travis Scharr, substituting for Michael Puckett and his cramps. Russell Turley fell to a hot Adam Brown 6-3, 6-3 at #1 and the Majors were down 2-0 quickly. Wes Hill fell to Ryan Bean who played like a human backboard by final score of 6-1,6-3. This loss left the Majors one match from elimination.
The fabulous freshmen started coming through for the Majors with Tim Shoptaugh getting his best win of the season with a 7-6(5),6-0 victory over Will Matthews at #2 to shrink the lead to 3-1. Chris Rolen let a 6-5 lead slip away in the first set, won the second and was up 4-2 in the third when unfortunately he started to fall victim to cramps. With the trainer visiting the courts and messaging the cramps, Chris fell violently down and was retired at 4-4 in the third as Coach Pennington would not allow any more trainer help to play and retired Chris for treatment to make a comfortable trip home
Trevor Harris had won the first set 7-5 at #6 and was on his way to victory with a 5-4 lead in the second to Jack Coble.
The Majors fall to 7-7, 0-4 and will head to Auburn University of Montgomery to play in its national tournament. The Majors open with #6 Freed Hardemann of the NAIA.
