| Five
freshmen could push for playing time in 2005 |
|
The 2005-06 Lady Majors improved with a ninth place finish, a national
Academic Team award, several individual ITA Scholar/Athlete awards,
and great team chemistry. This year's team is preparing for a top
five finish, academic excellence, community service with the Mississippi
School for Deaf, and a challenging match scheudle.
Our fall schedule is highlighted by the ITA Regional, Millsaps Fall
Invitational, and playing many nationally ranked teams in the Washington
& Lee Invitational. The spring schedule is highlighted by a
spring break trip to California and against some national powers,
the nationally competitive Blue * Gray of Montgomery, AL, the Millsaps
Spring Invitational, and a trip to TN.
Two year ALL-SCAC Sr., Katie Anderson, from Shawnee Mission, KS,
is returning to add to her impressive tennis resume. Five other
returning letterman look to contribute as well. Senior, #2-4 Mia
Cowgill from Sacramento, California will study in Mexico for the
Fall and come back in the spring. #5-6 Leslie Frese of Birmingham,
AL narrowly missed being all-conference and will continue her basketball
career in the fall and join us in the spring. Sophomores Hillary
Hamblen of Halls, TN played #2-4,and Beth Sadler of Hickory, TN
played #2-5 will look forward to continued success. Senior Kelsey
McKnight has made the transition from basketball to tennis and looks
to contribute significantly.
That's the good news, but better news is that we have five incoming
talented freshman that are as good as our starters. It should make
for an interesting season. Emily Stewart of Mobile, AL is a state
tennis champ and two sport star, Catherine Alissa Vincent of Tuscaloosa,
AL is a great player and 3 sports star, Beth Piraino of Memphis,
TN is another great tournament player and 2 sport star, and the
threesome looks to give the majors the srongest lineup in years.
Caroline Massey of Meridian, MS and Lekha Sunkara of Ridgeland,
MS are also hoping for playing time as freshman.
We're excited about the 2005-06 season, schedule, and service to
the community. Hope to see you at the courts!
