Thirteen teams competed
in the NCAA South Region Championships including three-time defending
National Champion Emory University.
The winners of the Championship
singles and doubles qualify for the Small College National Championships
which pit Division III, Division II, NAIA, and JUCO Champions together.
The South Region Championship
begins the qualification process for the National Championships
in the spring. Emory dominated the event, but Millsaps College was
in 6th place with the number of wins before they left on the final
day.
Millsaps College won
all head to head encounters with 2005 14th South Region Mississippi
College. Millsaps College traveled with Emily Stewart, Alisa Vincent,
Beth Sadler, Crystal Bender and Kelsey McKnight.
Nine of the teams had
more players than the Lady Majors. Two time All-SCAC Katie Anderson
at number one, freshman recruit Beth Piraino, number six in 2005
Leslie Frese, and 2005 number three Hillary Hamblen were unable
to make the trip.
The Lady Majors hope
this showing without four of its players can get its first regional
ranking in a few years. Whats even more noteworthy, is that
we only practiced for roughly a week due to Katrina.
