ALCORN
STATE - Despite
a valiant effort against Division I opponent Alcorn State University
on Wednesday night, the Millsaps volleyball team fell to the
Braves 3-1 after forcing the match to four games.
In the first game of a four-series match, Millsaps (5-4) successfully utilized
its offense, downing the home team 30-28 to take a brief one-game lead.
Unfortunately for the Majors, they couldn’t break the Braves the remainder
of the match, dropping the subsequent three matches, 31-33, 26-30 and 25-30.
In games two and three, Millsaps lagged and fell behind but showed surprising
resilience by storming back in game four. The Majors closed up a ten point margin
and were within three points of a victory when Alcorn State closed out the match.
Toni Manley, Kim Fox and Sally McCann all contributed significantly for Millsaps.
Manley, a first-year sophomore from Madison, Miss., had six kills out of 12 attempts,
while McCann led the team with 32 assists and four service aces. Fox rounded
out the top performances with 15 kills and eight defensive digs.
“They are a young team that will undoubtedly pick up good experience from
this loss,” second-year head coach Matt Linebarger said. “I’m
proud of the way our team continued to fight. Competing closely with a Division
I opponent will undoubtedly prepare us for conference play which opens next week.”
Millsaps will get a shot at redemption on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. when the Majors host
Alcorn State in a match slated for “PAC the HAC” night.
The Majors return to action Sept. 16, traveling to Florence to take on Wesley
College at 2:30 p.m. and then hosting the University of Mobile in the Hanger
Dome at 5:30 p.m.
