JACKSON -- In
the Majors' first trip home to the Hangar Dome since Sept.
8 during the Invitational -- a span of 18 matches
-- Millsaps snapped a five-game skid in just 49 minutes,
winning 3-0
over Rust (30-17, 30-2, 30-16) to improve to
10-17 on the year.
Millsaps jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead to start Game 1, forcing
head coach Avery K. Mason to call a timeout for the Lady Bearcats
of Rust College.
Out of the timeout, the Majors scored 9 of 13 points to take
a 16-6 lead, capped off by a huge kill from freshman Constance
Page off an assist from fellow frosh Hailey Miranda.
Millsaps
would go on to win Game 1 30-17.
Just as they did to start the match, Millsaps opened Game 2 with
a big run to jump on top, using a 7-0 lead and scoring the
first 13 points en route to a lopsided 30-2 win. It marked the
largest single-game win over an opponent this year since
a 30-6 win over Wesley on Sept. 22.
In Game 3, Rust rallied for seven-straight points to cut the
Majors lead from 14-3 to 14-10, taking advantage of a pair of
kills from LaShantae Tabor and Aminah Muhammad.
That's as close as the Lady Bearcats would get, however, as Millsaps
scored 16 of the final 22 points to win the game 30-16 and the
match 3-0.
Millsaps as a team pounded out 35 aces, led by
sophomore Sally McCann who picked up a game-high nine. McCann
ranked No. 1 in the SCAC last season and became only the second
Millsaps
player
to
lead
the
conference
in service aces with 95.
Freshman Kate Hall contributed to seven of the Majors' 29 kills
in the match while fellow frosh Victoria Romano picked up six,
Heather Keenan added five and Page had four. Miranda and Mallory
Clark added 10 and 11 assists.
Millsaps will continue a stretch of five non-conference games
next Tuesday night, traveling to Clinton to face off with the
Mississippi College Lady Choctaws at 7 p.m. They will then play
host to Dillard University and Wesley College on Oct. 17 and
18 at 7 p.m.
