Majors Win Doubleheader, Nothing Scary About it
Millsaps drops Rust and Wesley College 3-0

October 13, 2006

JACKSON - On Friday the 13th at the Hangar Dome, there was nothing to be scared of, as the Millsaps volleyball team swept its final two home matches of the 2006 campaign by defeating Rust College and Wesley College 3-0 on senior night.

Senior co-captains Kim Fox and Colleen Kelly played the final two home matches of their careers, after four successful seasons with the Majors.

A native of Evergreen, Colo., Fox has tallied 817 career kills, 23 set assists, 126 service aces, 1,083 defensive digs and 50 total blocks as an outside hitter.

“Kim is a hard nosed competitor who comes in extremely focused each day,” second-year head coach Matt Linebarger said.  “She loves a challenge both academically and athletically.”

Fox is working towards a degree in biology and a minor in psychology and plans on getting her master’s in biomedical science.

Kelly has tallied 921 kills, 32 set assists, 118 service aces, 1,168 digs and 130 total blocks in her Millsaps career.  Because of her accomplishments both on and off the court, Kelly earned All-SCAC third team honors and Academic Honor Roll accolades in 2004.

Kelly has also received the Millsaps College intramural Woman of the Year award the previous two seasons and currently serves as the intramural supervisor in the Hall Activities Center.

“Colleen is one of the most athletic female athletes to ever put on a Millsaps uniform,” Linebarger said.

In the first match of the afternoon against Rust, the Majors took care of business by downing the Lady Warriors in three-straight games 30-20, 30-17 and 30-20.

Game 1 produced a series of streaks, as both teams put together a string of points to keep the game in reach.

The game was knotted early at 3-3 before Millsaps (10-14, 2-7 SCAC) ran off nine-straight points to take a 12-3 lead.

The Lady Bearcats responded right back, rallying for eight of the next 13 points to cut the deficit to 17-11.

Millsaps took the next eight points to take a commanding 25-11 lead, before Rust rallied for eight-straight of its own to cut it to 25-19.

The Majors pulled it together from there, taking five of the final six points to win Game 1, 30-20.

Millsaps took Games 2 and 3 in identical fashion, as the lead hovered around seven points before the Majors won 30-17 and 30-20.

In the nightcap, Millsaps proved to be too much for the first-year volleyball program at Wesley College, as they downed the Lady Warriors 30-12, 30-10 and 30-22 in only 45 minutes.

Game 1 saw the Majors jump out to a quick 9-4 lead and then rally for 21 of the final 28 points to cap off an impressive 30-12 victory.

Game 2 was never close, with Millsaps taking leads at 13-3, 18-6 and 24-8 before closing it out 30-10.

Wesley College put up quite a fight in the final game, staying with the Majors the entire way with a lot of hustle and determination.

The game was tied early at 4-4, before the Majors took leads at 16-10, 18-14 and 20-18.  Millsaps finally pulled away at the end, rallying to win 10 of the final 14 points to take the game 30-22 and the match 3-0.

The Majors will be on the road the remaining 11 games of the season, beginning with an Oct. 17 match at Mississippi College.  They will then head to Conway, Ark., to compete in the SCAC Western Divisional Tournament.
