Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Chemistry is to meet the needs of three types of students:

  • Those who plan to enter graduate school for advanced study, or to enter the field of industrial chemistry
  • Those who plan to enter the professional schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and other professions requiring a knowledge of chemistry.
  • Those who are non-science majors, but who desire the subject for its cultural and educational values.
In addition to strong traditional classroom, laboratory, information technology and library experiences, the Department offers the opportunity for a challenging research experience for
those who desire it.

Areas of Research

Photochemical reaction and rearrangements, clay chemistry, environmental soil studies, chromatographic and electrophoretic chiral separations and characterization of entantiomeric resolution, solute reactions with chromatographic surfaces, mechanisms of paper degradation, decarboxylation of esters and carboxylic acid salts, molecular modeling, multimedia applications
in chemical education.

Facilities/Resources

  • Chemistry classes are taught in the Olin Hall of Science, where there are instructional laboratories, and student and faculty research laboratories.  There is also a 125 seat auditorium with a multimedia/computer facility.
  • Chemistry Equipment includes a Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer, an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, a GC/Mass spectrometer, a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR), a high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) , computer-based capillary electrophoresis, research grade gas chromatographs, fluorescence spectrophotometer; ultraviolet/visible spectrophotometer.  The department has analytical, organic and physical instrumentations as well as  research laboratories.
  • Chemistry students at Millsaps have access to the campus network both hard-wired (Ethernet) and wireless .  All buildings on campus are connected via optical fiber.   All classrooms in the science buildings are wired for computer access.    Multimedia classrooms and a multimedia lab are also available in the Olin Hall of Science.    A T1 connection to the internet provides Worldwide Web access for the campus.
