March 22nd, 2003

On March 22nd the Department of Classical Studies was delighted to co-sponsor "Abhinaya Hela."

Sasikala Penumarthi is the preeminent teacher and choreographer of Kuchipudi dance. Between dances, Ms. Penumarthi explained how this ancient form of dance uses mudras, or gestures, each with unique significance, to tell stories through movement.
Akhila Takkallapalli, a senior at St. Andrews Episcopal School, and Mangala Maddali, a freshman at Clinton High School display their intricate footwork in "Koluvaithiva Rangasayee"- part of "Daruvu" a dance performed by temple dancers to wake up Lord Vishnu.
